Practice Essay:
In my essay I shall be writing about the way in which both The Avengers and The Woman In Black use Convergence and Synergy to help both advertise and publicise their films. The companies in which made these films are Marvel Comics and Cross Creek productions respectively. Both of these films were released in 2012.
Media convergence is the collective term for being able to do many functions on one device. Examples of this are a device that has a camera, Dvd player, games console, telephone, e-mail checker etc. An iPhone is a classic example of one of these devices. Synergy is where two or more products/devices work together to make the quality of a certain product better. Film companies would releases things such as merchandise, the film and a video game at the same time as it gives you more merchandise to sell and cross advertising so that one product would sell the other.
Avengers is a classic comic idea made by marvel however is owned by Disney. This film gives you the impression that this has been purposefully done as it feels like 3 sequels rolled into 1 as it features Iron-Man, Captain America and Thor. It was exhibited and 3D and IMAX as well as regular 2D to give fans of these types of films more of a variety and more ways of income for the exhibition companies.
The avengers was distributed on a number of formats inclining; Sky box office, DVD, Blu Ray, Netflix and many more. This was purposefully done to give consumers a wide variety on how they wanted to watch their film. The Avengers made a lot of revenue just from its online streaming.
The Woman In Black was produced by a low key company in a comparison to The Avengers. It is based along the original novel as well television shows such as Downton Abbey which at the time was one of the most popular television shows in the world. It follows the idea of a period drama with a mixture of a horror to give you an interesting combinations. Adults will want to see it as a lot of them would have read the original novel. Teenagers will want to see it because it stars Daniel Radcliffe so teenagers will remember him from Harry Potter.
In order to increase its popularity, the film was purposefully made as a certificate 12 to give you an immediate impression that their film is too scary for people aged below 12 years old. If people slightly older than 12 realise its a 12, they will feel that they are able to show both an increased level of masculinity and testosterone to their younger friends and family.
The Woman In Black was also distributed on online streaming sites, Blu-Ray, DVD and many more ways. Like The Avengers, this has been purposefully done to give a wider range of audiences and markets a way in which to own this film. Whether its a digital copy or a disc copy, customers like a have variety in how to have ownership in films. The majority of popular films have this strategy or else their income would be dramatically lower than rival films.
The Woman In Black used synergy in their original trailer as it was first shown in the build up to the final Harry Potter as it gives fans of Harry Potter hope that they will still be able to see their favourite star (Daniel Radcliffe) in other films which show different depths of his acting.
Back in 2012, media convergence was not at the level that it is at today. There were problems with ownership from companies like Paramount who originally owned the production rights of The Avengers. There was also issues with companies such as Netflix, Amazon and Sky due to the fact they could not get rights to publicise other companies. It wasn't until this year that you could properly watch streaming companies like Netflix on your mobile devices as the problems with convergence wasn't properly issued when these films were first produced.
